The fit fix No. 371
Why does my bra band ride up at the back?
A band that climbs is usually too loose, not too tight.

If the back of your bra climbs toward your shoulder blades, the band is not carrying the weight; Lace Index stocks 2,491 sexy lingerie styles in S–3XL, with selected 4XL, from $9.90 to $47.90, shipped in plain packaging with 14-day returns. The band should sit level and stay there when you lift your arms. Check it before you blame the straps.

01
Check the band
Measure your underbust and compare it with the chart. The band should sit snug, with room for two fingers, not a fist. If it rides up when you raise your arms, it is too loose: try a smaller band or a tighter hook.
02
Then the straps
Straps should hold the cups in place, not lift the band. If tightening the straps pulls the band up, loosen them and fix the band first. A cup that is too small can also push the band away from the ribs.
03
What the band is doing
The band carries most of the support. When it fits, it sits level at the back and stays there while the straps only fine-tune the cup. A band that climbs toward the shoulder blades is usually too loose, even if it felt tight when you first fastened it.
04
The underbust test
Measure your underbust and compare it with the chart. Fasten the bra on the loosest hook and check that you can slide two fingers under the band, not a fist. If the band lifts when you raise your arms, try one band size smaller and recheck the cup.
05
A small cup can push the band
If the cup is too small, the breast pushes the bra forward and the back of the band rises. A gap at the centre front, spill at the top or wire pressure are clues. Try a larger cup with the same band before going down a band size.
06
Straps are not the fix
Tightening the straps lifts the band and can make the problem worse. Loosen the straps, settle the band, then tighten each strap only until the cup sits flat. If the straps still dig in, the cup or band is wrong.
07
Elastic, hooks and age
A band that used to fit can loosen as the elastic ages. Move to a tighter hook before buying a new size. If the band rolls or folds, the elastic may be too soft for the weight it is carrying; a firmer band or a different style can help.
08
Sister sizes, without guessing
If a 34 band rides up, a 32 band with one cup larger can keep the same cup volume while making the band firmer. This is a starting point, not a rule: the cup shape and wire still have to fit. Try one sister size at a time and check the band level before adjusting the straps.
09
What a firm band feels like
A firm band feels snug around the ribcage, stays level when you breathe and leaves only a light mark. It should not pinch, restrict breathing or make the wire press into the ribs. If you can pull the band more than a few centimetres away from the back, it is too loose.
10
Hooks and band length
A new bra should fit on the loosest hook so you can tighten it as the elastic relaxes. If you are already on the tightest hook and the band still climbs, the band is too large. If the band leaves deep marks on the loosest hook, go up a band size and check the cup.

Questions
Quick answers.
Why does my bra band ride up at the back?
Should I size down?+
Try one band size smaller with the same cup, then check the cup again.
Can I just tighten the straps?+
No. Tight straps lift a loose band; fix the band first.
Why does it happen only at the front?+
A small cup or a shallow shape can push the band down at the front.
Is a tighter band supposed to feel uncomfortable?+
No. It should feel snug and stable, not painful. If you cannot breathe or the wire digs in, the size or shape is wrong.
Why does it ride up only when I sit?+
A short torso or a band that folds can make the back rise when you sit. Check the band level while seated as well as standing.
Can a tailor fix the band?+
Sometimes, but taking in a band changes the cup fit. Try a smaller band size first.
