Humour and arousal are not opposites, although most advice treats them as if they were; Lace Index stocks roleplay costumes and lingerie in S–3XL, with selected 4XL, shipped in plain packaging. Laughter lowers the stakes, and lower stakes are what allow people to try things they would otherwise avoid. The couples who manage lingerie and roleplay best are usually the ones who can laugh when a strap snaps or an accent collapses. This page is about play as a strategy, not a garnish. It also covers what to do when a game collapses.

01

Shame cannot be argued away

You cannot reason yourself out of self-consciousness. You can, however, outplay it. A game gives the mind somewhere else to go, which is why a costume often feels easier than a plain conversation about wanting. The absurdity is part of the mechanism, not a flaw in it. A game borrows your attention and gives it a shape, and shape is easier to step into than a mood. That is why a game often works when a direct suggestion does not.

02

Let the costume be silly

A police hat and a pair of cuffs are inherently a bit ridiculous, and pretending otherwise makes them harder to wear. Lean into it. A shared joke about the outfit takes the pressure off the performance and leaves the charge intact. The costume is a joke you are both in on, and being in on it together is the intimacy. Nobody is being asked to be impressive.

03

Give the game a rule

Play works better with structure: a time limit, a role, a small task, a forfeit that is not humiliating. Rules make the game legible and give both people something to do besides watch themselves. Keep them simple and agree them before anyone is undressed. A rule can be as small as a sentence you have to say, or as simple as who speaks first. Rules also make it easier to stop, because stopping has a shape.

04

Laughing is not losing

If something goes wrong and you laugh, the scene is not ruined. Rupture and repair are part of play, and a couple who can recover quickly has more range than one who needs everything to be seamless. The only real failure is continuing something that has stopped being fun. The repair is often the most intimate part, because it proves the two of you can find each other again. A quick joke and a change of position will do.

05

Play needs a brake

Have a word or gesture that means the game is over, not the evening. Humour can slide into mockery, and mockery has a different taste. Check in on the way, especially if the scene involves teasing. The brake is what allows you to go further, not what holds you back. A brake used early is not a failure; it is what teaches both people that the game is safe to enter. Agree the signal before the scene, and use it the first time it occurs to you, not the third. A brake that has never been used is not proof of safety, only of caution.

06

When play falls flat

Sometimes the joke does not land, or the costume feels stupid in the wrong way. Stop, say so, and change direction without treating it as a verdict. Not every experiment works. The willingness to try and then abandon is what keeps the repertoire alive. The next attempt can be different, and the shared memory of a bad one is usually funnier than the bad one was.

Questions

Quick answers.

How does humour make lingerie and roleplay less intimidating?

Is it bad to laugh during roleplay?+

No. Laughter releases tension. The thing to watch is mockery aimed at your partner rather than at the situation.

How do we start being playful if we are both shy?+

Begin with something small: a note, a prop, a silly rule. Low stakes first, and stop before it becomes a test.

What if the costume feels ridiculous?+

It probably is. Say so, together, and then decide whether the ridiculousness is fun or whether you would rather do something else.
