Measure first, then choose the shape. Between sizes, take the larger.

02Dress the moment

Match the piece to the outfit, the light and how long you will wear it.

03Keep it easy

Plain packaging, tracked delivery and 14-day returns with the seal intact.

A power cut interrupts a plan, which is why it can improve one; Lace Index stocks date-night and couples lingerie in S–3XL, from $9.90, with plain packaging and 14-day returns. The room gets smaller, the phone becomes a torch, and there is nothing to do but talk. This checklist keeps the practical parts boring so the rest of the evening can be unplanned. No candles on stairs, no flames left alone, no one locked in.

01

The first five minutes

Find the torch before you look for anything else, and use it on the lowest setting that works. Check whether the whole street is out or just your flat, and check the fuse box only if you know what you are doing. Turn off the hob and the oven at the wall. Unplug the things that matter. Then stop fixing and decide whether the evening continues. Keep the torch pointed at the floor; the ceiling bounce is enough to see by.

02

The light

Candles in proper holders, on stable surfaces, away from curtains, sleeves, paper and pets. One candle per room is enough, and none in a room where someone might fall asleep. Battery candles or a rechargeable lamp are better for corridors and bathrooms. Never carry a lit candle up or down stairs, and never leave one burning when you leave the room. Group them on one tray so you can carry the light with you.

03

The warmth

If it is cold, close the doors on the rooms you are not using and stay in one. Layers, blankets, a hot drink from a flask if the kettle is electric and the power is out. Keep the fridge and freezer closed; everything inside will hold for hours if the doors stay shut. Check on anyone in the building who might need help, then come back. A hot water bottle does more than a second blanket.

04

The extra layer

A power cut is not the moment for anything that needs adjusting in the dark. Choose a soft slip, a lace and mesh cami nightdress or a robe over whatever you were already wearing. Layers are practical and they also slow the evening down. If you were already dressed for the evening, keep it on; the candlelight was part of the plan, not a replacement for it. Warm socks finish the outfit better than anything else in the drawer.

05

When the power returns

Lights coming back is a small anticlimax, so decide together whether to carry on. Blow out every candle, check the hob and the oven, and reset the clocks without making it a task. If the evening was better in the dark, say so. A power cut is not a test of a relationship, but the hour you spent talking through one is usually worth remembering. Leave one lamp on low rather than every light in the flat.

Questions

Quick answers.

What do we do when the power goes out on a date night?

What should we have ready before a power cut?+

A torch, spare batteries, a lighter, a couple of candles in holders and a blanket in a known place.

Is it safe to use candles during an outage?+

Yes, in stable holders away from fabric and never on stairs or left unattended.

What about the fridge?+

Keep the doors closed. Food stays cold for hours if you do not keep opening it.
