Why is there a gap at the top of my bra cup?

Gaping is not always 'too big'; the shape and band matter too.

01

Check the band and cup

If the band lifts away from the ribs, tighten it first. A loose band lets the cup tilt away at the top. If the band is snug and the cup still gapes, the cup may be too large or too shallow for your shape.

02

Try a different shape

Balconette and demi cups follow a lower neckline; full-cup styles cover more. If the gap is only at the top edge, a different shape may fit better than a smaller size.

03

Start with the band, not the cup

A band that lifts away from the ribs lets the cup tilt forward, which opens a gap at the top. Fasten the bra on the loosest hook, lift your arms and see whether the band stays level. If it climbs, try one band size smaller with the same cup before you change the cup size.

04

Cup volume versus cup shape

A gap can mean the cup is too large, but it can also mean the cup is too shallow or too tall for your breast shape. A shallow cup pushes tissue down; a tall cup can stand away from a shorter upper breast. Look at where the gap appears: at the top edge only, at the centre, or along the side.

05

The two-finger test

With the band fastened and the straps loosened, slide two fingers under the band at the back. If they fit easily, the band is probably too loose. Tighten the straps only after the band is stable. A snug band should not leave deep marks or make it hard to breathe.

06

Cup height and neckline

Balconette and demi cups follow a lower neckline; full-cup styles cover more of the upper breast. If a gap only shows under a low-cut top, the cup height may be the issue rather than the volume. Try a different shape in the same size before sizing down.

07

Fabric, seams and stretch

Soft lace can collapse at the top edge; a lined or moulded cup holds its shape. A rigid lace cup has less give than stretch mesh. Check the product description and the model fit notes, and remember that a bra that gapes when you stand may sit flat when you sit or move.

08

Gaping under a loose top

A gap can be more visible under a loose neckline because the cup edge has room to stand away. Try the bra with the outfit you plan to wear, not only with a fitted T-shirt. If the gap appears only when you lean forward or raise your arms, the band or cup shape may still be wrong, but it may also be a posture issue rather than a size issue.

09

When the size is right

A small gap at the top edge can be normal if the band is snug, the wire sits flat and the cup does not collapse when you move. If the gap is only visible in one posture, try a different cup height before changing size. A bra that feels comfortable and supports the breast is not automatically the wrong size.

Questions

Quick answers.

Why is there a gap at the top of my bra cup?

Should I size down?+

Only after checking the band; try one cup smaller if the band is snug.

Why does it happen with lace?+

Soft lace can collapse at the top edge; a lined cup holds its shape.

One side gapes more?+

Breasts are often uneven; fit the larger side and adjust the strap.

Should I go down a cup or a band?+

Check the band first. If it is loose, go down a band with the same cup; if the band is snug, try one cup smaller.

Why does only one side gape?+

Breasts are often uneven. Fit the larger side and tighten the strap on the smaller side; a small pad can also even the line.

Can a cup that is too small gap?+

Yes. If the breast is pushed down and the top edge stands away, the cup is too small or too shallow, not too large.
