A bralette is a soft, usually wire-free bra; Lace Index stocks 2,491 sexy lingerie styles in S–3XL, with selected 4XL, and each product page lists the exact sizes in stock. It can be very comfortable, but it gives less lift than an underwired bra. The band and the cut decide how much support you get.

01

Support

A wide band and a racerback or longline shape support more than a narrow triangle. Stretch lace adapts; rigid lace holds its shape. For a larger bust, look for a bralette with a wide underband and adjustable straps.

02

When to wear

Bralettes suit relaxed days, small busts and layering under loose clothes. If you need lift or separation, an underwired bra will do more.

03

What counts as a bralette

A bralette is a soft, usually wire-free bra with a light structure. It may pull on over the head or fasten at the back, and it may have adjustable straps. The lack of a wire makes it comfortable, but it also means the band and the cut have to do more of the support work.

04

Support levels

A narrow triangle gives the least support. A wide underband, a racerback, a longline shape or a second layer of mesh adds stability. For a fuller bust, look for a wide band that sits flat under the bust and straps that adjust without digging into the shoulders.

05

Fabric and give

Stretch lace follows the body and is forgiving; rigid lace holds a shape but has less give. Mesh is light and cool; lined cups add coverage and a smoother line. Check whether the cups are single-layer or lined, and whether the band has elastic or a firm edge.

06

Sizing and coverage

Use your underbust and bust measurements rather than a dress size. If you are between sizes, take the larger band if the underband digs in, or the smaller band if it rides up. Check the cup coverage in the photos and the product page size list.

07

When a bralette is not enough

If you want lift, separation or a smooth line under a fitted top, an underwired bra usually does more. A bralette is best for relaxed days, layering, small busts and low-support evenings. It can still be supportive, but choose the shape for the job.

08

Under clothes

A bralette with lace seams or a deep neckline can show under a thin top. A smooth, lined style or a low-profile band gives a cleaner line. If you want a bralette as a base layer, choose a colour close to your skin tone and check the neckline against the outfit.

09

Care and shape retention

Wire-free bralettes keep their shape better when washed in a mesh bag and dried flat. Heat and a tumble dryer can relax the elastic. Fasten any hooks before washing and keep the lace away from velcro and zips.

10

Bralette or sports bra

A sports bra is built to control movement; a bralette is built for light support and a softer line. For yoga or a long walk, a sports bra is usually better. For a relaxed day, a bralette with a wide band can be comfortable without compressing the bust.

11

Straps and adjustment

Adjustable straps should sit flat without digging into the shoulders. If the straps slide, a racerback clip can keep them in place, but it also changes the neckline. If the band rides up, shorten the straps only after checking that the underband is snug; tightening the straps will not fix a loose band.

Questions

Quick answers.

What is a bralette and is it supportive?

Is a bralette supportive?+

Less than an underwired bra; a wide band and racerback help.

Can a large bust wear one?+

Yes, with a wide underband and adjustable straps.

Is it for all day?+

It can be, if the band does not dig.

Can I wear a bralette all day?+

Yes, if the band stays flat and the straps do not dig in. Take it off if the underband leaves deep marks.

Do bralettes have hooks?+

Some do; many pull on over the head. Check the product page for the closure.

Are bralettes good for a small bust?+

They can be, especially with a wide band and a cup that sits flat rather than gaping.
