Cage bra
A cage bra has extra straps across the cups or the chest, and those straps are usually adjustable. Check the underband first, because if the band is loose the cage will move and the straps will not sit flat. A soft elastic strap is kinder than a rigid one, especially on a fuller bust. The cage is decorative; the band is what supports.

A harness is a separate strap piece worn over lingerie, and it is sized by the shoulder and waist rather than the cup. Check the adjustment at both points and make sure it sits flat instead of cutting in. A harness can be worn over a bodysuit or a simple bra, which makes it a useful layer. If the straps are too short, the harness will pull the bra out of place.

Cut-out
A cut-out bodysuit has panels removed at the waist, hip or chest, and the edges need to sit flat. Check the fit when seated, because a cut-out that looks clean standing can gape or pull when you sit. A lined panel is easier under clothes and gives more coverage; a single layer is more revealing. Confirm where the cut-out sits before ordering.

Strappy back
A strappy back is a design detail, not a support feature. Check that the straps are adjustable and do not dig into the shoulder blades, and that the band is firm enough to hold the piece. A strappy back can show under a sheer top, which is part of the appeal. If the straps cross low, check them against a chair back.

The fit rule
The band carries the piece; the straps adjust it. If you need to tighten the straps to keep the band up, the band is too loose, and no amount of strap adjustment will fix it.
