Guest list of two
Decide the dress code in one sentence: black tie, dark lace, one colour only. Send an invitation, even if it is a note on the pillow. The formality is the fun. Agree on how long the masks stay on and whether you will speak in character. Keep the guest list at two; the party is the privacy. If one of you is not in the mood for formality, drop the invitation and keep the mask; the party can be smaller.

The invitation
Write three lines: the time, the dress, and one instruction such as bring a mask or wear the colour. Leave it where it will be found. The invitation sets the tone before either of you is in costume, and it gives the evening a beginning that is not just getting dressed. Use real paper if you can. A card on the pillow does more than a message, and it costs nothing. Write it in your own hand, even if the handwriting is bad.

Mask on
Choose a mask you can see and breathe through. Test it for ten minutes before the night. The outfit underneath should be one you already know fits: a lace bodysuit, a satin cami set, a sheer slip. Keep the mask as the only loud element and let the rest stay simple. A mask hides the face, so body language has to do more. Keep the mask off your face while you get dressed, then put it on last, in front of the mirror.

Room to room
Move through the space rather than staying in one place. Drinks in the kitchen, music in the living room, the bedroom last. Put a lamp in each room and keep the overheads off. Offer an arm. Speak a little less than usual. The mystery is in the pause, not in a complicated backstory. Do not explain the rooms to each other. Let the other person find the next lamp and the next drink. A party of two still needs a host who notices.

Masks off
Agree on a signal for the reveal and a stop word that ends the night; either one is enough. Take the masks off together, look at each other, and laugh. The faces coming back is the actual ending. Change into something soft, put the masks somewhere safe, and talk about the evening in your own voices. Then decide whether the party gets a second edition. If the masks come off early, that is not a failed party; the reveal is whenever both of you want it.
