An athletic body is not a size, it is a set of angles: shoulders, lats, quads, and a waist that may be straight rather than curved; Lace Index stocks 2,491 sexy lingerie styles in S–3XL, with selected 4XL, from $9.90 to $47.90, shipped in plain packaging with 14-day returns. Lingerie cut for a softer silhouette can pull, gap or dig on that frame. None of that means your body is hard to dress. It means the piece has to earn its place, starting with the band and the strap.

01

Check the band, not the cup

Measure your underbust, then fasten the band on its loosest hook and see whether it sits level at the back. On a muscular ribcage the band often rides up because the lats push it, not because the cup is wrong. A wider band or a longline shape spreads that pressure. Sort the band first and most other problems disappear. A band that sits level is the whole foundation; everything else is adjustment.

02

Check the strap angle

Straps set wide apart slide off sloping or muscular shoulders, especially once you move. A racerback, a halter or a style with a back conversion pulls the line inward and keeps the strap on the shoulder. Adjust the length while standing, then lift your arms overhead and see whether the strap stays where you set it. If the strap still slides, the band is probably loose rather than the strap being wrong.

03

Check the lat room

Look at where the back edge lands. A band that cuts across the lat will feel tight even in the right size, while a lower back line or a backless halter sits under the muscle instead. A bodysuit with stretch through the torso follows the shape rather than fighting it. This is a cut question, not a sizing failure. Try reaching forward as well; the back edge should not lift away from the skin.

04

Check the leg line

Strong quads and glutes change how a high-cut leg behaves. A very high leg can cut across muscle and roll; a lower rise or a shorts-style base sits flatter and stays put. If you are between sizes, take the larger one and adjust the waist rather than squeezing into a leg opening that will not stay still. Look at the line in a seated position, since that is how most of the evening is spent.

05

Check in motion

Give the piece sixty seconds of real movement: arms overhead, a deep sit, a twist, a walk to the door. Anything that shifts, digs or needs tugging will keep doing it all evening. Change the size or the cut until the movement is quiet. A piece that survives the test is the only kind worth wearing out of the changing room. If two sizes both move, the cut is wrong for you, not the size.

Questions

Quick answers.

What lingerie suits a muscular or athletic body?

Do I need a sports bra instead?+

No. A wide band and a firm underband give support, and the piece does not have to look athletic to work under a dress or on its own.

Why do straps slip off my shoulders?+

Wide-set straps plus a sloping shoulder line. A racerback or halter moves the pull inward, which usually solves it.

Is a corset comfortable on a muscular back?+

Only if the back length is right and the boning sits beside the spine rather than on muscle. Try sitting in it before you decide.
