How tight should garter straps be?
A garter is a tension system, not a decoration.

Garter straps are a tension system; Lace Index stocks 2,491 sexy lingerie styles in S–3XL, with selected 4XL, from $9.90 to $47.90, shipped in plain packaging with 14-day returns. They hold stockings up by pulling against the top band, and every problem with them comes back to how much tension they carry and where it lands. Set them too loose and the stocking sags; too tight and the strap digs, the stocking rolls and the evening ends early. This page covers how to set the tension, how to check it, and how to take the piece off without a struggle.

01
Tension is the whole job
A garter strap works by connecting the suspender belt or the garter band to the top of the stocking. The strap should be taut enough to hold the stocking without pulling it out of shape. That is a narrow range. Too loose and the stocking slides down inside the strap; too tight and the top band rolls under the pressure. Adjust with the stocking on, because the fabric changes the answer.
02
Setting the straps before you stand
Fasten the stockings while seated, then stand and check each strap. Many people find the front straps need slightly less tension than the back, because the leg moves forward more than it moves back. Walk a few steps, sit again and look for slack. A strap that has gone loose in a minute will be useless by the hour. If the belt has more than four straps, set the side ones first and work around. Check the tension once more after you put your shoes on.
03
Stockings that stay up
The stocking top has to be strong enough to take the pull. A lace top with a wide band holds better than a narrow, slippery one. If the stocking rolls at the top, the strap is too tight or the band is too narrow; loosening the strap is the first fix, not tightening it. Check that the strap sits flat against the band rather than twisting, because a twisted strap concentrates the load on one point.
04
Circulation and red marks
Pressure should be visible as a light line, not a deep groove. Take the piece off if your legs feel numb, tingle or go cold, and do not ignore a mark that stays after ten minutes. Loosen the straps if you plan to sit for a long time, since a seated position changes the angle and increases pressure at the back of the thigh. If you have circulation concerns, ask a clinician before wearing tight garters for long periods.
05
Taking it off safely
Unhook or unclip while seated, and roll the stocking down rather than pulling it from the toe. Pulling stretches the yarn and can start a run. Release the tension on both sides before you slide the belt down. If a strap has dug in, give the skin a minute before you put anything else on. Fold the stockings flat and keep them away from hooks, zips and anything with Velcro in the laundry.
06
Matching tension to the evening
A standing evening needs more tension than an evening spent lying down. If you know you will be horizontal, set the straps slightly looser and accept a small amount of slide. If you will be walking or dancing, set them firmer and check again after the first hour. Carry a spare pair of stockings if the night is long, because a run at the top cannot be repaired invisibly. Stand up once more before you leave the room. Plan for the position you will actually be in.

Questions
Quick answers.
How tight should garter straps be?
How tight should garter straps be?+
Taut enough to hold the stocking without rolling the top band. If the band rolls, loosen rather than tighten.
Can I wear stockings without a garter belt?+
Thigh highs with a silicone band can stay up on their own; stockings without one need a garter.
What if a strap snaps?+
Remove the stocking rather than pinning it. A safety pin under tension can open and scratch.
