Royalty roleplay is etiquette with the volume up; Lace Index stocks roleplay costumes and lingerie in S–3XL, with selected 4XL, shipped in plain packaging. Titles, bows, formal address and the small ceremony of being announced. Couples use it because power is easier to play when it comes with a script. The crowns are optional. The agreement about who holds authority, and for how long, is not. Most couples find the first five minutes the hardest, and then settle.

01

Crowns are about permission

A monarch in a bedroom is only a monarch because everyone agrees to pretend. That is the whole trick. The title is loaned, and it can be returned at any time. Couples who enjoy this kind of scene usually enjoy the formality more than the costume: the correct address, the waiting to be spoken to, the small rituals. All of it is consensual theatre. Say that out loud before you begin, so the authority never has to be defended. If either of you feels foolish, say it early; the ceremony survives laughter.

02

Build the court in a bedroom

You do not need a castle. A chair becomes a throne, a rug becomes the floor, a robe becomes a coronation gown. Use one or two objects and let the rest be language. Lighting helps: lamps rather than overheads, and a candle if you have one. Clear the floor so kneeling is comfortable. The set should suggest a court without requiring you to act in a room that looks like a fancy dress shop. A dark throw over the chair does more than a plastic crown.

03

Etiquette as a game

Write three rules of the court and no more. For example: the sovereign speaks first; the subject asks permission to rise; no first names while the scene lasts. Three rules are easy to remember and easy to break on purpose. Breaking one can be part of the play, if the consequence is agreed. Do not invent a legal system. The pleasure is in the formality, not in the paperwork. Choose rules that are easy to see and easy to forgive.

04

Who kneels, and why

Kneeling is the most loaded gesture in the scene, so decide who does it and what it means. Some couples use it as a mark of respect; others use it as a prelude to something else. Either is fine if it is chosen. Check in about knees, floors and clothing before anyone gets down. A cushion is not a mood killer. If the person kneeling wants to stop, they stop, and the court does not argue. Agree in advance how long the position lasts.

05

Costume comfort check

Corsets, robes and long skirts look wonderful and can be miserable after an hour. Test the outfit before the night: sit, kneel, walk, breathe. Choose fabric that does not scratch, and keep a robe nearby for breaks. A lace corset with stockings reads as court dress; a kimono robe reads as private chambers. Both work. The costume should support the character, not dictate the evening. Keep a plain robe within reach for the parts between scenes.

06

The throne room closes

End the reign on purpose. Say the closing line, take off the title, and put the chair back where it lives. Then check in as equals. Ask whether the formality felt good or too much, and whether any rule should change. Aftercare here is about restoring symmetry. A partner who is still bowing on the way to the kitchen has not been brought back. Walk out of the room side by side. Put the cushion away together, and let the room look ordinary again.

Questions

Quick answers.

Royalty roleplay: how do couples handle courtly power?

Do we need titles?+

One title each is enough. Keep them simple and agree who uses which.

What if kneeling is uncomfortable?+

Use a cushion, change position, or drop the gesture. Comfort comes first.

Is this the same as D/s?+

It can overlap, but courtly roleplay is usually lighter and more theatrical.
